Reading Minds - What Is Mentalism, and How Can You Perform It?
by: Chris Lloyd
Many people have heard of mentalism, but few know exactly
what is involved. So let’s start with a clear definition.
Mentalism is defined as a sub-category within the field of
magic. It has to do with tricks dealing with the mind’s
power. Rather than relying heavily on tools or grand
illusions, it has more to do with try to give the
impression that the magician can tap into the minds of
audience members, or use his or her own mind control to
cause objects to move, etc.
Some people think that mentalism actually depends on some
spiritual connection between the supernatural realm and the
magician. While there might be a very remote possibility
that some magicians actually do have some insight into the
spiritual world, most illusionists use mentalism tricks and
strategies just like in any other type of magic. Over the
next few pages you’ll learn some of them!
For example, remember at the beginning of this course when
we talked about Derren Brown and his ability to make people
fall asleep over the phone? It’s not that he actually has
the power to control other people’s minds - he just knows
tricks to get people to do what he says.
There is definitely a difference between the two. Derren
isn’t dabbling in the occult or anything like that; rather,
he’s using human psychology to create intriguing and
mystifying illusions!
For many reasons, including the fact that the old “pull a
rabbit out of a hat” type of magic is not as surprising and
interesting as it once was, mentalism is one of the fastest
growing and most popular forms of magic being practiced
today. There are many fabulous and highly talented
magicians who specialize in this form, Derren Brown being
just one of them.
A Brief Explanation of Hypnosis
Hypnosis is one very highly popular form of mentalism.
Psychiatrists actually regard hypnosis as an everyday
activity or state that we undergo when we are watching
movies, reading books, or driving down a long empty road.
When we are doing these sorts of activities we enter a
trancelike condition in which we are very vulnerable to the
power of suggestion and feel extremely relaxed.
Some people are mistakenly under the impression that
hypnosis is like being asleep, but it’s actually a
hyperaware, hyperattentive state. It’s also a state of
total consciousness.
You know how when you get engrossed in a book you tune out
the outside world, paying attention only to the story
itself? It’s similar to that. You’re tuning out extraneous
stimuli and focusing in only on one source, the subject or
magician who is speaking directly to you. Thus you are very
likely to do whatever the magician tells you to do when
you’re in a hypnotic state!

Flower Pictures - A Mild Obsession #3
by: Patrick Heathcock
Yellow daisy, oh yellow daisy - please tell me about fills and flags! How does one use them effectively?
Good question sighs my daisy. An answer or two…
One can shoot anything straight without flash in good daylight and get okay results. I’ve read a load of articles in the last few months saying that bright sunshine is bad, bad, really bad, for color saturation when shooting flowers or anything for that matter - true often, but not always so.
One needs to consider all sorts of things - purpose, time of day, result required, etc! Dawn and dusk produce warm, shadowy light and if one wants to take a landscape photograph of note, this would be the ideal time to do it…using a tripod of course! Shutter speeds slow down in order to get the depth of field required, f16 or even f22, so one is often shooting at ¼ or ½ a second. I’ve met a few people who can handhold shutter speeds that slow but most of us…never in a million years! In the landscape world tripods rule okay!
I know, I know, ironic considering that I spent a bit of Mild Obsession #2 justifying my desire to shoot unfettered by a three legged monster. I did say in my defence, though, be consistent. Part of that consistency is recognition of the tools needed in each particular situation. Life is a balancing act, no more so than in the world of photography.
Another natural lighting situation to consider is sunlight mid-morning to mid-afternoon (harsh front light, but often awesome backlight), tricky at the best of times but even this light can be used well and effectively if one knows how to control it.
A really good way to learn lighting in controlled circumstances is to use angle poise lamps and a small subject on a plain background. For my subject I chose a yellow daisy…not the same one plucked from a faraway field, no, a yellow painted tin daisy, beautiful nonetheless, which I stood up on a piece of white A3 card!
What about color balance you cry? At the risk of being boringly repetitive…digital technology…white balance (WB)… All hail the little tiny green men inside one’s camera, running around changing the color gels so that we can shoot color corrected images no matter what the light source. Incredible stuff!
Try this…
Grab a plain backdrop, a cotton sheet, piece of white card or anything that detracts as little from the subject as possible. Take your subject, place it on your backdrop not too close to the background, set up an angle poise lamp to the left side of the subject and point the light directly at the subject (preferably slightly above). You should be producing huge, harsh shadows. Interrogation time!
Now grab a piece of white card and line it up side on to your subject on the other side from the lamp and move it around until the shadows on the subject are softened to some degree .i.e. fill…The more one can soften the light on subject the better, so next step is to soften the source.
Turn the angle poise around pointing away from the subject angled 45 degrees up, then place a piece of white card in front of it reflecting the light back toward the subject - hey presto softer light -much softer. Soften things even more by playing with more fills on the other side of the subject too. A good soft result, not so dramatic perhaps, but eminently flattering.
I hasten to add at this point that I have done fashion shoots in the past using just harsh direct light, emulating movie-lighting of the 30’s, and achieved gorgeous results. It all comes down to control i.e. positive decision making rather than negative.
Play with this studio lighting setup in miniature until you get a feel for it. There are so many possibilities…
Try this too…
Shine two lamps at the center of your background, one each side, angled at 45 degrees to the plane of the background. Make sure that your subject is flagged to stop any light falling directly onto it. How? Place black card (flags) on each side of the subject (slightly back of the subject) showing the background clearly but not allowing light from the lamps to spill onto the sides of the subject. Now place two pieces of white card in front of the subject facing the background. Leave a small gap to shoot through.
Result?
A subject only lit by backlight and reflected light from the card in front. It’s a really good way to produce a backlit daylight feel. I use it all the time with studio shots of people. It can be fantastically flattering, if done well.
Play! Play lots. Light control is very satisfying when you get the hang of it.
To learn how to translate this lighting control to daylight conditions and to find out more about flags, scrims and other goodies, keep a lookout for Flower Pictures - A Mild Obsession #4.
Remember always - good lighting is good lighting period. Sounds obvious, I know, but real easy to forget.
See the beauty!

Leather Jacket Care
by: Jake Berlin
If you own a fine leather jacket then you’ve probably drawn a few looks here and there because of the style. Unfortunately over time, even a great leather jacket can turn ugly on you if it isn’t properly maintained.
Prevention is Your Best Option
When you first bring your leather jacket home, you want to condition and waterproof it. After that, proper care will keep it looking fabulous for years. In fact, did you know that with proper care, leather out wears denim 20 to 1? I’ve heard stories where a good quality, well maintained leather jacket can last as long as 50 years!
Find out everything you can about your leather jacket, get the right stuff and set aside time for mandatory cleaning. If you don’t do it yourself, then pay a pro to clean your leather jacket for you. You can thank me later for that tip!
Leather Jacket Repair
How can you repair the sleeves on your leather jacket when the edges are cracking, without making the leather weak or super soft?
If you have any loose edges, you can actually tack them up with a small dab of rubber cement which is sold at most grocery or retail stores. If the edges are not torn but just starting to look rough, one of the best options is for you to use a combination of mink oil and beeswax.
Typically this concoction is sold as paste, making it easy to apply. While it helps to improve those rough spots, it does soften but not too much. This combination will also help preserve the leather and prevent stains.
Leather Jacket Maintainence and Restoration
One of the top products you can buy for your leather jacket is called Lexol. This brand is excellent for restoring worn leather, bringing it back to its natural state. Another professional cleaner/conditioner is called Fiebing’s All Purpose Leather Cleaner and Conditioner. It too helps restore leather that is worn while also helping to prevent water spots, stains, and even cracking.
Another great product that does it all, conditions, waterproofs, preserves, softens, and restores leather is called Snow-Proof. This product has no color or odor and is excellent on leather jackets as well as boots and shoes. Best of all, it will not leave a greasy feel.
Carnauba Cream will also help to restore and smooth out your leather jacket. It helps to resist scratches and finger prints and does a great job of restoration. One other product you should investigate is called Leather Balm with Atom Wax. This particular product was formulated specifically for leather to help with preserving and restoring. It also helps produce a nice soft, natural finish.
I suggest doing some research on these products before settling on one. Type the product name into a search engine and read up on their different properties. Prices and results will vary depending on the application.

Hydration in Bodybuilding
by: Tim Santorini
So many people don’t realize how important it is to keep your body hydrated, especially during work out. Also most of them will work out too much adding to the negative effect dehydration can have. What is really concerning is that in bad conditions like extreme warmth and an excessively long work out with lack of water several incidents like strokes can happen. This should be avoided and it helps more than you’d imagine if you drink enough water.
Water is a big part of our body (55 to 75% of our body weight) and also think about the fact that blood is 90% formed of water. Now just think about it! What can happen if your blood does not have enough water? It’s very simple, it will thicken and the natural flow of it will be damaged. Also, the muscle is formed of 70-80% water.
Many people ask: how can they know how much water to drink during a workout? It is a simple procedure that should be followed. All you have to do is weigh yourself before exercising and you have to have the same weight when the work out is done. If you weigh less then you are dehydrated.
On the other hand drinking too much water will lead to a condition called Hyponatremia. This can also lead in extreme cases to serious accidents like strokes and comas. Too much water is also bad as you can see.
The kidneys are very important in our body when talking about hydration as they regulate the fluids by controlling the flow of urine. Have you ever noticed the difference in color of the urine? If it is excessively clear then you are over hydrated and if it is too dark then you are dehydrated.
Be attentive to the levels of hydration in your work out. As you can see it is very important and as a general rule it will also help you have a better and more productive exercise session.

Winning At Backgammon Variant - Plakoto
by: Oliver Mathews
Plakoto a variant of backgammon is a popular game in Greece. The motive behind playing Plakoto is to bring all your checkers around to your own home board and then bear them off. The player who bears off all of his checkers first wins the game. This game is usually palyed along with the two other variants of backgammon, namely Fevga and Portes. Together these three games are called Tavli and are played in sequence usually one after the other. They have matches of three, five or seven points. A Bulgarian version of Plakoto is known as Tapa.
Playing Plakato
Every player has fifteen checkers to start with. These checkers are placed on opponent’s one-point. The players have to move their checkers in different direction on the Plakato board. At the start of the game each player rolls one dice and the player with the highest roll gets the chance to start. Unlike backgammon the player has to again roll the dice to begin his first turn. A player who has won a game starts the next game. The number of points, or pips, or the places a player can move his checkers is decided by the roll of the dice.
Plakoto Rules
In the game of Plakoto a checker can be positioned only on an open point. An open point is the one that is not occupied by two or more checkers of the opponent. The numbers that appear after rolling the two dices make separate moves .For example, if a player rolls 4 and 2, he may move a checker four spaces to an open point and one more checker two spaces to an open point. A player also has an option to move a single checker to a totla of six spaces to an open point the precondition for this single move is that the intermediate points (four or two spaces from the starting point) must also be open.
Doubles in Plakoto
The doubles in Plakoto are played twice. For example, a roll of 3-3 means that the player can use the three’s four times. If it’s possible the player must use both the numbers of a roll and all four numbers in the case he draws a double in the roll of dices.
Trapping The Opponent
Hitting is not allowed in the game of Plakoto. In its place, if a player lands on a point occupied by an opponent’s single checker, the opponent cannot move his checker unless the player moves his checker. In other words the opponent’s checker is trapped. A block is created by two checkers of a player lying on a point or one of his checkers pinning the opponent’s checker.
Mother Checker
Mother checker is the last checker on a player’s starting point. It is very important in the game of Plakoto. If the mother checker gets pinned by opponent’s checker before it has left the starting point - the game is over and two points are lost. This particular rule has an exception if the opponent has his own mother checker at the starting point. A game in which mother checker of both the players are pinned results in a tie.
Bearing Off
Bearing off in the game of Plakoto starts after a player has moved all of his fifteen checkers on his home board. A player can bear off by rolling a number that corresponds to the point on which the checker is placed. If there is no checker on the point indicated by the roll, then the player has to make a legal move using a checker on a higher-numbered point. If there are no checkers on higher-numbered points, the player must remove a checker from the highest point that has a checker. In this way he can remove all of his checkers from the board
Scoring
The first player who bears off all his fifteen checkers is declared as the winner of the game. If the losing player has successfully borne off at least one checker, he loses only one point; otherwise two points are lost.
