The Eyes Have It
November 29, 2004
Did you know Leonardo da Vinci sketched and described several forms of contact lenses in 1508, and in 1632 Rene Descartes suggested the possibility of a corneal contact lens? Civilization has come a long way from these early ideas to the high-tech advancements we have to care for our eyes today. We even have choices for improved vision other than through a contact lens or eyeglasses. LASIK surgical procedures are done on the eye and intended to reduce dependency on eyeglasses. It doesn’t promise perfect vision, but it offers convenient benefits to people that don’t want to put on glasses.
Millions of people are using gas permeable rigid contact lenses, extended wear, soft-lens, bifocal vision, a whole rainbow of color contacts, no-fuss disposables, and lenses that protect from UV rays. If eyeglasses are more your style, you have never had a bigger selection than what is on the market today. Make a bold statement with colors of eyeglass frames or let the frames blend into your face. I have four different colors of eyeglasses and I plan on buying more. If all of these options become tiresome, you might choose the LASIK surgery where your eye should become less dependent on glasses and you will have the convenience of not wearing anything on your face unless you want to. Wouldn’t it be nice to wake up in the morning and be able to see everything clearly without putting on glasses?
Color cares for the eyes
Color contacts are fun and you can present a different personality to the world. Did you always want to be a blond with blue eyes - how about a red head with green eyes? Now you can because of the many choices available. Designer eyeglasses are in vogue so why not buy different eyeglass frames and treat them as jewelry, watches or other accessories that match your clothing? You might be looking for a fabulous pair of reading glasses to bring out in a restaurant. There are even styles of lorgnettes that you can stylishly wear around you neck, and use them as a magnifying glass when the need arose. If you have woodworking or remodeling projects to do at home, don’t forget about safety glasses. They are also more fashionable, comfortable and functional than ever before. It doesn’t matter if it is for fashion, fun or function; take the time to properly care for your eyes.

Your Candles Are Killing You and Your Furniture - Substitute It!
November 29, 2004
Even though most of the houses are well lighted with electric powered lights, we can’t escape using candles at home. Whether it is for a romantic candlelit dinner, for festive season such as Deepavali or Christmas or as back up when electricity cuts off, we know that candles are useful for every household. What we don’t know is that candles are a common unrecognized cause of poor indoor air quality.
To be specific, the ingredient used to produce candles such as paraffin contains a host of toxin. This makes candles the major cause of black soot deposition, which damages home interiors, not to mention skin and lungs. Other dangerous ingredients in candles are lead wicks, synthetic scents and colorants.
Solution? Always go back to the nature! Try natural wax such as beeswax, soy, bayberry and palm. There are many goodness in beeswax which is derived from flowers and bees. It is nontoxic, naturally aromatic (Hey! After all, its from the flowers!) and when burned emits beneficial negative ions that actually help purify the air.

Assertiveness: Key to Better Parenting
November 29, 2004
I have always been aware of my number one weakness: non-assertiveness. But I have come a long way from the time when I couldn’t say ‘no’ to a child molester and not understanding the importance of telling my parents.
At my first job after high school, I had the misfortune of working for someone who told me that I could have it all but with no questions asked. He said so clearly that there were women who slept their way up and I could do the same. He then started to hold me tightly and was already groping all over. I was too stunned to move in the beginning but I did try to push him away. Luckily for me, a security guard walked into the office.
Some guardian angels must be looking out for me. On both incidents, I could have been a statistic. I didn’t have the courage to tell anyone but I made a promise to myself that if I should ever climb the corporate ladder, I would do it with my brains.
Unfortunately, my parents didn’t have the extra money to put me through four years of university. I worked as a tutor to three kids throughout my tertiary years and with a scholarship loan, I managed to finish my degree in journalism with a second class upper.
I took on the first job that came my way: as a seminar organizer. Again the same old pattern emerged. For six months my boss didn’t contribute to my retirement account. I was not aware that it was unlawful. Then she made me answer calls from all the speakers I had invited to give seminars for payments due to them. She had purposely delayed paying them for reasons only known to her. I couldn’t see a good future with her, so I quit.
Many of my course mates had joined the newspaper and there was an opening for a cub reporter. I got in and was learning the ropes pretty well at the news desk. Six months later, I was transferred to the features desk.
It was all rosy in the first year and because I was getting familiarized with the work and all, I gladly took on anything that came my way. Not such a smart move really. Whenever my editor asked for a volunteer for some uninteresting articles, no one would do it. And because I had set the pattern for being the obliging one, or rather the one who couldn’t say ‘no’ most of the time, I had to do the assignments. I had never asked for extension of deadlines and I was also the “secretary” who took phone messages for the others. When the time came for assessment and salary increments, I was not the favoured staff. After two agonizing weeks, I finally plucked up enough courage to speak to my editor about it. She merely said: “I was happy with your work. All I did was to recommend (the increments) but really, it was up to the management to decide!”
Would you stay on with a leader who wouldn’t stick up for you? I asked for a transfer to the business desk where its editor was a known task master but fair and just.
Six years later, I found myself in a greater challenge. My five-year old daughter was a victim of a class bully at her kindergarten. From the many books on bullying that I read about, I had gathered that so long as the victims were not coached to be assertive and helped to build their self-esteem, the chances of them remaining victims continued into adulthood.
Since then, I have been trying to help my daughter increase her self-esteem. One of the many ways I learnt is to teach a child to love herself. Well, we are still working on her remembering to say: “I love you Mummy. And I love myself too.”
I knew repeating this mantra would only help for awhile. One evening driving through a heavy traffic I made up a story to entertain my kids. It was about a six-year old girl named Lulu who would do anything for her friends because she wanted to be liked by them. Lulu didn’t like herself much because she didn’t think her kind-heartedness amounted much. “Now, if you were Lulu, do you suppose your friends would like you if you didn’t like yourself in the first place?” I asked my children.
I was surprised even my two and half year old boy simultaneously replied no with his sister.
The story continued with Lulu being asked to pick some fruits from a tree by her friends. As she was climbing up the tree, fiery red ants bit her all over. But because she feared rejection from the others if she quit, she carried on. When she started to yank a bunch of fruits from a branch, she inadvertently dropped a beehive onto the ground.
The story ended with Lulu being hospitalized for bee stings but she learnt an unforgettable lesson about self-love and being assertive.
Now whenever my daughter needs a reminder about self-love, all I need to mention is Lulu.

How To Ward Off House Thief
November 29, 2004
To most of us, security at home is very important. Ever experienced coming home one night and found your belongings scattered around? Or maybe you heard funny noises while you were sleeping and wondered if it was some thieves in your house? Would you like to worry less and enjoy your home better? Well, besides house alarm or sealing up your house with grills and locks, why not place an interesting home decor, which will help to ward off house thieves?
Chinese culture believes that by placing umbrellas in the lobby or at the front of the house, your house can be prevented from being the thief’s target. Umbrellas placed into a nice urn near the front door not only add a spark to your lobby but also make the area organized while you can reach for an umbrella easily. There are many urns in the market but we highly suggest that you get one that matches your door, wall and size of your lobby. If you can’t decide, get a plain ceramic urn that will match any background. Chinese Feng Shui also mentioned urns next to the front door will help to capture the energy (chi) flowed into the house. Besides urns, you can try using baskets, umbrella stands and vase.

Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas - How to Tap in to the Holiday Publicity Bonanza
November 29, 2004
If your product or service can be given as a gift, a publicity
windfall awaits at the end of the year - but you need to start
working in June. Each December, media outlets cover the newest,
the hottest and the most unusual Holiday gifts. The reporters
assigned to develop these pieces typically depend on two sources
of information:
1. Phone interviews with local store owners
- and -
2. Press materials that have been sent by publicity seekers.
Let’s deal with Point 1. Here’s a cool trick: In early
November, write a letter to stores and major websites that carry
your product. Remind them that they may be hearing from
journalists soon about hot gift ideas, and request that they
consider mentioning your product when that happens. Point out a
few reasons why your product is the newest, coolest, best or
whatever. Ask the vendor to drop you an e-mail or give you a
call if a story results that mentions your product.
Now, on to old-fashioned publicity. When to contact the media
depends on the publication or program’s lead time (how far in
advance of publication or airing the material is developed).
Magazines like Woman’s Day have a lead time up to six months, so
get materials to them now. Newspapers have a lead time as short
as a week for feature material, so send materials in November. In
between are wire services, medium-lead magazines, “in-flight”
magazines and others. To learn the lead time of a particular
media outlet, call the editorial department. If that doesn’t
work, try the advertising department.
What you send should be kept simple — a press release about your
product/service, a pitch letter explaining why it’s such a great
gift idea, and, if applicable, a disk with color product photos.
See our articles “How to Write a Great Pitch Letter”
http://www.publicityinsider.com/pitch.asp and “How to Write a
Great Press Release” http://www.publicityinsider.com/release.asp
for more details.
As you craft the materials, think about where your
product/service fits. Based on its nature, cost, rarity or
usefulness, it may work with a variety of typical Christmas Gift
stories such as: Great Stocking Stuffer Ideas, Gifts for
Teenagers, Gifts for the Person Who Has It All, Gifts for
Executives, Gifts that Relax, etc. By suggesting a category for
your product, rather than simply stating “Here’s a product that
would make a nice holiday gift”, you’re making yourself stand out
– and maybe even giving the journalist an idea for a story angle
that he or she wouldn’t have thought about otherwise. Either
way, your chances of getting coverage are greatly improved.
